Abstract
In the late Joseon Dynasty, when Joseon entered a period of enlightenment, newspapers played a key role in saving the country and enlightening the people's wisdom. This article examines the development of private newspapers in the late Joseon Dynasty, from the budding period in the early 1880s, to the golden period in the mid-1890s, to the severe period in the late 1910s. Among them, The Independent, Hwangseon Newspaper, Empire Newspaper, and The Korean Daily News were the four most influential newspapers at that time. Comparing the characters of the four major reports, there will be differences and commonalities. The difference is that the emphasis and writing style of each newspaper are different, but the common features are: the main writers of the four major newspapers participated in political groups to conspire for national reform, participated in educational groups to conspire to educate and save the country, and most of them were enlightened Confucians to promote the national spirit. The last years of the Joseon Dynasty were an era of active private newspapers and non-governmental organizations, working together to develop national strength in order to restore national power.
